"Program: Hansen Summer Institute on Leadership and International Cooperation" on Peace and Collaborative Development Network
San Diego, CA – The Hansen Summer Institute, based at the University of San Diego’s School of Leadership and Education Sciences is currently accepting applications for its June 29 - July 20, 2016 program. This program for college age scholars offers a unique leadership experience in international cooperation
Fully funded by a generous grant from the Fred J. Hansen Foundation, the Hansen Summer Institute will take place in San Diego and involve assembling University students from the United States (5 students) and abroad (15 students) from a variety of developing countries and regions of social strife. All travel, room and board, and program expenses are covered by the Hansen Foundation. The 2016 summer institute represents our seventh year of operation; 145 fellows have thus far gone through our training and life-changing experience. Students will live, work, and become friends together at the University of San Diego, a beautiful campus that overlooks the Pacific Ocean.
A primary goal of the program focuses on creating an international community of college-age scholars (ages 20-25) who will use their summer experience to foster lasting friendships and acquire a common practical understanding of a more peaceful future. Program elements involve training in the latest leadership skills of conflict resolution, mediation, and public speaking and cross cultural education.
Selected fellows can become social entrepreneurs. The program features a 3-day International Social Venture Workshop. The workshop, conducted by the Center for Peace and Commerce, will inform Fellows about social entrepreneurship as a workable option for improving international economic development – a key ingredient for world peace. Not only will Fellows receive training on the nuts and bolts of social entrepreneurship, they will have the opportunity to formulate a social entrepreneurship proposal during the summer institute, present it to the other Hansen Fellows, and if it is chosen, receive a Hansen grant as seed capital for implementing it. This innovative program is a comprehensive student experience that will live beyond the three weeks in San Diego.
Classroom training complements local excursions to San Diego historical attractions and cultural events, such as the Mayor’s office, the U.S. - Mexico border, Sea World, and a harbor cruise. Hansen Summer Institute training provides participants with hands-on tools for resolving conflict for application and re-direction to their own situations at home.
Applications from international students will be accepted until January 4, 2016. Applications from U.S. students will be accepted until February 15, 2016.
