6th International Summer School: Regional Connectivity, economic prosperity and STABILITY
Department of Political Science, University of Peshawar (UOP) & Hanns Seidel Foundation (HSF), Islamabad
Theme and Purpose:
In Europe as in Asia, various interregional organizations and platforms, such as the European Union (EU) or the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) have played a crucial role for regional integration both in terms of economy as well as security. Similarly, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) has emerged as a powerful platform which not only enhances cooperation regarding security, but on a wide range of economic, social and cultural issues. Thus, a holistic approach toward regional connectivity and cooperation may both lead to greater security and stability as well as sustainable development. Considering their geopolitical position and economic assets, Pakistan and Afghanistan may serve as links between South and Central Asian states. Regional connectivity in this part of the world can steer economic development and peace not only for Pakistan but for the entire region. The multiple issues that are connected to state-building processes in the region make the task of regional integration more complicated. The conflict-ridden nature of the region makes the interconnectivity all the more desirable. There is a need to understand the broader concept of regional connectivity and other related subthemes especially in the context of South and Central Asian countries. Furthermore, a prerequisite for regional integration is social linkage and mutual understanding of respective needs and interests. This understanding can further lead to devise strategies for holistic and sustainable development as well as durable peace in the region. The summer school intends to serve as a platform from which a better understanding is generated and strides are made towards peace and cooperation in South and Central Asia.
Approach:
The approach of the program is interactive, and participants are expected to learn not only from the resource persons but also from each other by sharing their own experiences. Along with the academic sessions, visits to government and non-government institutions, group meals, cultural nights and sightseeing ventures are also part of the program. Participants of the Summer School will participate actively in the 8th HSF-UoP International Conference titled ‘The Dynamics of Change in the Pakistan-Afghanistan Region: Politics, (Dis)integration and Reformation in the Borderland’.
