4th International Summer School on Governance, Conflict and Peace Building
The Department of Political Science at the University of Peshawar in collaboration with the Hanns Seidel Foundation, Islamabad is pleased to invite applications from University students of Pakistan, South and Central Asia for the 4th International Summer School to be held in Bara Gali, the Summer Campus of the University of Peshawar from August 7-22, 2017.
The broader theme of the Summer School focuses on ‘Governance, Conflict and Peace’ in the Central and South Asian region. Conflicts have been pervasive throughout human history. The deep-seated consequences of such conflicts have inspired scholars and policy makers to delineate and understand the phenomenon more closely. The inquiries into conflict dynamics has led to the emergence of newer theories and concepts of ‘conflict transformation’ and ‘Peace building.’ These disciplines not only engage knowledge related to underlying causes of conflicts and their escalation into larger wars, but also employ interdisciplinary approaches to conflict management. Conflict transformation demands fundamental structural changes in the society, economy, and the polity. The political success of such transformation critically depend on how institutions, especially within the formal state structure, are built and their capacity to deliver services is enhanced. There is a need not only to comprehend such contentious issues, but also to devise strategies for more successful confidence building and conflict transformation ventures for dealing with internal and external conflicts in the region.
The up-coming Summer School aims at understanding the various inter-disciplinary and cross-disciplinary theories and approaches to conflict transformation in the South and Central Asian region. It further attempts to engage the participants of the Summer School in thought provoking sessions focusing on the intricate issue of conflict transformation in the region. The approach of the program is interactive and participants are expected to learn not only from the resource persons but also from each other by sharing their own experiences. Along with the academic sessions, other activities include, visits to government and non-government institutes/offices, group meals, games, campfire/cultural nights, hiking to the nearby tourist resorts and sightseeing ventures. Participants of the Summer School will participate actively in the 6th international conference on the “Dynamics of Change in the Pakistan-Afghanistan Borderland”, which will be held at Bara Gali campus, University of Peshawar from August 20-22.
The organizers believe that no relationship within and among the states could be complete without genuine and sincere efforts at building trust among the people of the region. The Summer School is one such platform, which will go a long way in promoting purposeful relations through understanding the dynamics of conflict, governance and transformation in the region.
Participants will be provided transport, accommodation and food during the summer school. Each participant is expected to have read the literature sent to them via email before the start of the Summer School in order to meaningfully contribute to each session during the Summer School. Short listed candidates will be interviewed via Skype. Selected participants are required to deposit a refundable registration fee of Rs. 5000/- (from Pakistan) and USD 50 (from abroad) upon acceptance of their application through wire transfer.
