Academic Outlook
It is a state of honour that I am serving at the prestigious University of Peshawar as Chairman and Professor at the Department of Geography and Geomatics (GIS and Remote Sensing). I am holding degrees of Bachelor of Sciences in Bio-Geo-Chemistry, Master of Science in Geography with distinction, Master of Science in Urban & Regional Planning with Gold Medal, MPhil in "Applied Geomorphology", Post-Graduate Dip in GIS and Remote Sensing, Doctor of Philosophy in "Environmental Geography" and Post Doctorate in Flood Risk Modelling and Management from Kyoto University, Japan. I started my commissioned service in 1998 from Education Department, Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (October 1998 to February 2002) and then joined University of Peshawar-Pakistan in February 2002, where I am still serving.
Research Interests
Prof. Dr. Atta-ur-Rahman is serving as a Chairman Department of Geography and Geomatics (GIS and Remote Sensing), University of Peshawar, Pakistan and President, Pakistan Geographical Association (PGA). He is holding degrees of Bachelor of Sciences in Bio-Geo-Chemistry, Master of Science in “Geography” with distinction, Master of Science in “Urban & Regional Planning” with Gold Medal, MPhil in “Applied Geomorphology”, Post-Graduate Dip in GIS & Remote Sensing, PhD in “Environmental Geography” and Post Doc in “Flood Risk Modelling” from Kyoto University, Japan. He is regularly publishing in prestigious journals with a good share of publications in impact factor. He has over 170 publications, with a majority of publications in the field of climate change, hydro-meteorological, Agricultural Geography and Disaster Risk Management. He has supervised and produced 40 MS/MPhil and 12 PhDs.
Academic Endeavours and Services
Prof. Dr. Atta-ur-Rahman has extensive experience in research projects and completed several projects, which were mainly focused on environmental assessment, social vulnerability, disaster risk, disaster resilience, multi-hazards vulnerability and risk assessment, climate change, mapping Atlas, development plans and rehabilitation. He is a member of the National curriculum committee and incorporated the latest techniques and analytical methodologies in curricula at various levels. He is also Secretary, National Curriculum Review Committee on “Disaster Management. Furthermore, he has a longstanding experience of collaborative and research linkages, Faculty Exchange and Professional Networking with international organizations/institutions. He is interested in conducting collaborative and cross cutting multi-disciplinary research. He is also editor and member of editorial boards of prestigious national and international Journals and reviewer of numerous research journals. He has an extensive experience of organizing conferences, workshops, exhibitions, seminars and also participated in numerous national and international conferences, workshops, seminars, exhibition and symposia as a resource person.
Research Publications
I am regularly publishing in prestigious national and international journals since 1999 with a good share of publications in impact factor journals. I have a long list of over 170 publications, where a predominant majority of scientific research papers and book chapters are in the field of Environmental Geography, Applied Geomorphology and Disaster Risk Management. While conducting research and supervising MS, MPhil and PhD research scholars, Geographic Information System, Remote Sensing, Global Positioning System and Geo-statistical techniques have been specially applied.
Conference, Workshop, Symposia, Seminars and Exhibition Organized
I have organized several conferences, workshops, exhibitions and seminars, and also participated in numerous national and international conferences, workshops, seminars, exhibition and symposia as a resource person. Parallel to this, I regularly participate in national and international events to represent University of Peshawar and intend to organize at least one event per year. Additionally, national and international donors are also in loop to sponsor such events. Parallel to this, research scholars, students and faculty members are also encouraged to participate in the national and international forums/ conferences/ symposia/ workshops and represent the university.
Research Journal
Currently, I am Associate editor of “Journal of Science & Technology” and “Pakistan Journal of Geography”. In addition to this, I am reviewer of over a dozen of research journals. Parallel to this, for wide publicity and recognition, these research journals are in the process of registration with renowned abstracting and indexing agencies, and to pave way for its impact factor. Using my international network, the local and international scientists and students are specifically encouraged to contribute original research.
Mobilizing and Introducing Culture of Research
I envision to encourage and mobilize students and research scholars to publish their research in reputed national and international Journals. The culture and competition of research publication have been introduced and the students and young faculty members are my target theme. Collaborative and cross cutting multi-disciplinary research and to publish in impact factor journal(s).
Courses Taught at Under-Graduate, Graduate and Post-Graduate Level
Being a responsible faculty member, I got an opportunity to teach courses at under-graduate, graduate and postgraduate level in couple of universities (University of Peshawar, University of Engineering and Technology Peshawar, Kyoto University Japan, Riphah International University Islamabad etc.), degree awarding institutions and affiliated colleges. The courses which I have taught include Techniques of Hazards mapping, Disaster Planning & Management, Climate Change and Geo-informatics, Urban & Regional Planning, Applied Geomorphology, Basic concepts of hazards and disasters, Drought and Desertification, Climate change and Hydro-meteorological hazards, Disasters and resilient structures, Environmental Impact assessment, Environmental Planning and Management, Community Based Disaster Risk Reduction, Fundamentals of GIS, Remote Sensing and Photogrammetry, Advanced Remote Sensing, Application of Geo-informatics, Physical Geography, Economic Geography, Urbanization and Urban Sprawl.
Experience of Research Projects
Parallel to other assignments, I have completed over a dozen of research projects. These research projects mainly focused on environmental assessment, social vulnerability, disaster risk, disaster resilience, multi-hazards vulnerability and risk assessment, climate change, mapping Atlas, development plans and rehabilitation. Work on initiation of new projects have been started and for the same request have been made to the international donors and help the research students.
Thesis supervision and evaluation
I have an extensive experience of research supervision and evaluation at Master, MPhil and PhD level. I supervised numerous research thesis and adjudicated several dissertations.
Member of Academic Bodies
I am member of board of studies at university of Peshawar, Riphah International University and University of Engineering and Technology. In addition to this, I am member of Graduate Studies Committee of Geography, Urban and Regional Planning, Centre for Disaster Preparedness and Management, Geomatics (GIS/Remote Sensing). Parallel to this, I am member of Board of Faculty of Life and Environmental Sciences, University of Peshawar. Membership of Curriculum review committee is another strength. I also remained member of Academic Council, University of Peshawar.
Mainstreaming Analytical Methodologies at various level
Recently, I introduced/incorporated latest techniques and analytical methodologies in curricula at various level. The students and research scholars are specifically encouraged and motivated to learn and apply analytical methodologies in their research and keep pace with the rapid advancement in the field of Geography and Geomatics.

I have a longstanding experience of Research Linkages, Faculty Exchange and Professional Networks with international organizations/institutions. Initiation of Linkage programmes and networking with the Professional Scholars, Government Organizations, High Ranking World Class Universities, International NGOs and Institutions. Such programmes help the institute, faculty members and research scholars to learn and share the new ideas, concepts, techniques and methodologies for enhancing their teaching and research skills.
