NATIONAL CONFERENCE ON CPEC: PEACE AND DEVELOPMENT IN KHYBER PAKHTUNKHWA
A one day national conference on “CPEC: Peace and development in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa” was organized by China Study Centre, University of Peshawar at SAQ Auditorium on January 23, 2018. The conference started at 10 am, Prof. Dr. zahid Anwar Director China Study Centre explained the vision and mission of the China Study Centre and informed the audience about the objectives of the conference. Prof. Dr. Mohammad Abid the Pro-Vice-Chancellor delivered welcome address. He welcomed the distinguished guests and talked about his China travelogue which showed his old association with China. Prof. Dr. Habib Ahmad, Vice Chancellor Islamia College University was the chief guest who discussed the old and new Silk Road in detail. The Keynote address was delivered by Prof. Dr. Razia Sultana, Vice-Chancellor Shaheed Benazir Bhutto Women University, Peshawar in which she highlighted CPEC: Its opportunities and challenges. After a group photo and tea break second session started in which six speakers discussed different aspects of CPEC in the context of KP. Mr. Zamir Awan Deputy Director, Chinese Study Centre, NUST, Islamabad highlighted the nexus between peace and development. Mr Amir Rana Pakistan Institute of Peace Studies (PIPS) Islamabad analyzed Pakistan economic policy in the context of CPEC. Shahid Ilyas senior research fellow of the Institute of Regional studies (IRS) discussed regional integration in the light of CPEC. Nazir Ahmad, Director KP-TAVTA discussed transformation of training and vocational institutes in KP in the era of CPEC. Prof. Dr. Muhammmad Khan of IIU Islamabad discussed geo-strategic development and Pakistan in the context of One Belt One Road. Prof. Dr. Amir Khan, Head, Policy Studies, CPEC-Think Tank Islamabad explained different projects of CPEC and its benefits for KP, Pakistan. Renowned journalist of Pakistan Rahimullah Yusufzai chaired the session and emphasized balanced approach to CPEC. After lunch the third session started with Dr Raza Rahman Qazi, Head, PTV, Current Affairs, Peshawar, who discussed in detail the impact of CPEC on internal and external integration in the context of Pakistan. Prof. Dr Sohail Ahmad in his presentation highlighted avenues of cooperation between China and Pakistan in the field of agriculture. Dr Muhammad Sajid, Assistant Professor, department of Geology gave presentation on Pak-China cooperation the field of rare earth elements (REEs). Prof. Dr. Zahid Anwar, delivered his presentation on, CPEC: Peace through development in KP, Pakistan. The session was chaired by Prof. Dr. Tahir Shah, Vice-Chancellor FATA University. The Chair highlighted that CPEC is a blessing and this opportunity should not be missed. In the concluding remarks, Prof. Dr Mohammad Abid thanked all speakers, participants and organizers of the conference for making the event a success. A large number of Vice-Chancellors, Deans, HODs, scholars, journalists, academicians, practitioners, civil society and students participated in the conference.
