Reunion of Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, University of Peshawar
Department of Journalism & Mass Communication, University of Peshawar held the meeting of its Alumni on May 10, 2014 in connection with its Silver Jubilee Celebrations. The obvious reason for the excitement of participants was that this was the first grand get together of the graduates of this Department. Vice Chancellor, University of Peshawar, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Rasul Jan was Chief Guest on this occasion. The ceremony started with the recitation from the Holy Quran, followed by National Anthem. The gathering paid tributes to former Director of Information, Government of Khyber Pakhtukhwa, Mr. Iqtidar Ali Mazhar (Late), for playing his role in opening up the Department of Journalism at University of Peshawar. Former Chairman and senior journalist Hafiz Sana Ullah Khan narrated the story that how this Department got recognition from the journalist and academic community of this province soon after its inception. Former Dean, Faculty of Management and Information Sciences, and Ex-Chairman of the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, Prof. Dr. Shah Jehan Sayed shared his experiences and story of his attachment to this Department. He recalled the journey of this Department from ‘Journalism’ to ‘Journalism & Mass Communication’, shedding light on the establishment of Campus Radio Station at University of Peshawar, and the role of Deutsche Welle (DW), Friedrich Ebert Stiftung (FES), and Pakistan Broadcasting Corporation (PBC) in this regard. Chairman, Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, University of Peshawar, Prof. Dr. Altaf Ullah Khan, underlined the role of media in the prevailing situation while shedding light on the contribution of this Department particularly after the 9/11. He also spoke about different projects being run by this Department in collaboration with its partners. He informed the participants about the establishment of TV Lab and publication of Campus Bulletin, a fortnightly newspaper, published by this Department. Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Rasul Jan appreciated the role of this Department in producing hundreds of veteran journalists during the past 25 years, serving national and international media as well as other organizations, in and abroad. While assuring his utmost support to the faculty and students of this Department, the Vice Chancellor has also acknowledged their role giving real strength to this institution.
PSP, Muhammad Ali Baba Khel and Directorate of Information, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Ansar Ullah Khelji were elected as President and General Secretary of the Alumni Association of Journalism and Mass Communication, respectively. Mohammad Ali Babakhel also spoke on the occasion. The graduates and faculty of the Department prepared two TV Documentaries on the past 25 years of this Department, which were highly appreciated and enjoyed by the audience.
